
The Voltage Problem
Inconsistency as a Hardware Issue
You do not have a discipline problem. You have a Voltage problem. Your system is attempting to run high-intensity realisations through low-wattage wiring. Before we can go anywhere, we need to understand what Merit actually is -- and begin to build it.

Core Teaching
Merit, in the technical sense used here, is not virtue or spiritual currency. It is the amount of energy available to sustain genuine contact with reality. Without it, there is no basis for relating. No basis for communication. Practice goes two steps forward and two steps back -- never accumulating, never arriving anywhere.
Most modern practitioners are running on low merit: not because they are bad people or lazy practitioners, but because the conditions of modern life systematically drain the capacity to feel. We turn ourselves off to function. Over time, we become comfortable being numb. We narrate the idea of presence instead of experiencing it.
What we call 'distraction' in practice is usually not a weakness of will. It is the system recognising that staying would require more energy than is currently available -- and defaulting, sensibly, to escape. Voltage training is learning to stay two minutes past that moment of sensible exit.
Note: this is not about forcing yourself through discomfort for its own sake. It is about discovering that the edge of your tolerance is not a wall. It is the exact location where capacity is built.
Guided Practice: The Voltage Exercise
Before sitting, identify one thing currently present in your experience that you habitually avoid: a nagging anxiety, a chronic tightness in your chest, a background sense of inadequacy, an unresolved thought you keep batting away.
Sit for 20 minutes. When the habitual thing appears -- and it will -- do not redirect. Turn toward it. Place your full attention on it, the way you would study something genuinely interesting. Notice its shape, its temperature, its pulse or stillness.
When the impulse to escape arises -- 'I should focus on my breath instead,' 'this isn't meditation,' 'I'll deal with this later' -- note the impulse and stay. Two minutes past the moment that feels like enough. That extension is the training. That is Voltage being built.
